If you take a cruise around the United States you will find a lot of cities in which you'll encounter a lot of cheap houses. This happens for number of reasons, among which the fact that many people leave certain areas seems to be the most frequent.

These are towns that have a pretty poor economy and this happened especially due to some troubled times they have been through. Although they are recovering now, the prices in real estate are still low as not so many active people are ready to move to almost deserted areas.

This will prove that you are not moving in a really deserted area and that you will benefit form all the services you will need. I would not really be advisable to take kids with you, but in case the heap houses are really far from a college, then you should definitely make sure you encounter one in the city.
Of course, you cannot do the search for cheap houses only by having in mind some set criteria. You have to decide which things are the most important for you and your family and try to meet everyone's needs. You will also have to be ready to go to the respective towns and see those cheap houses you might hear from in the local newspapers or over the internet. Only after that you can decide which way to go and which house to buy.
